Prince Buster- A Pioneer of SKA.

(Cecil Bustamente Campbell)
(24 May 1938 – 8 September 2016)

The team at Black Scientists & Inventors would like to acknowledge the contributions of Prince Buster a pioneer in the music called SKA, invented in the Caribbean island, Jamaica in the 1950s/60s.

Buster along with others not only help put Jamaica on the world map with their music at the time, but also helped redefine, influence and shape modern day UK and much of Europe’s rock and popular culture music and style. We don't need to go to far to see the influence he had on some of the biggest artist to come out of the UK. There are so many that I can name, but just to name two, the 1980s/90s group Madness who took their name from Busters hit record with the same name and during the 2000s, the late Amy Winehouse performed and recorded Ska records .

We thank you, Prince Buster for your inventive, pioneering work within music that has given joy to millions of people around the world. RIP.

Other pioneers and artists that made this music huge internationally are: Derrick Morgan, Toots & the Mytals, Millie Smalls plus others.

More information on the contributions of black music to rock and popular culture around the world in general and the UK in particular can be found in the Ground-breaking Black Scientists & Inventors in the UK: Millenniums of Inventions & Innovations (Book 5). also see 'African Contribution to Modern Music' article.
